Renting a Car in Playa del Carmen — Your Questions Answered
How much does it cost to rent a car in Playa del Carmen?
Prices start at $20 per day, depending on the car you choose and how long you keep it. The longer the rental, the lower the daily rate — a month works out cheapest per day, a week sits in between, and short one-to-three-day rentals carry the highest daily rate. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and the car you have in mind, and we'll confirm your exact total before you book — insurance, unlimited mileage, delivery and deposit all included, nothing added at pickup.
Do I need a credit card to rent a car?
No. This is where we differ from the big international companies — most of them require a physical credit card in the main driver's name just to place the security deposit. We accept cash, bank transfer or crypto, for both the rental and the deposit.
Is a security deposit required, and how much is it?
Yes. The deposit is 7,000–10,000 MXN (roughly $400–580) depending on the car — smaller for the Mazda 2, larger for a seven-seat Dodge Journey. It covers damage to the vehicle during your rental and is returned in full when the car comes back in the condition you received it. We confirm the exact amount on WhatsApp before you book.
How old do I need to be to rent a car in Mexico?
You need to be at least 21 years old with a valid driving license. We don't charge a young-driver surcharge on top.
What documents do I need?
A valid driving license and a passport or other photo ID. Your home-country license is fine for a tourist stay in Mexico. If your license is not written in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it.
Is insurance included in the price?
Yes. Every rental includes coverage for theft, damage to the vehicle, and third-party liability — the mandatory cover you must carry to drive legally in Mexico. There is no separate insurance fee added at the counter.
Is there a mileage limit?
No. Every rental comes with unlimited mileage for the whole period, so a day trip to Bacalar or Chichén Itzá costs you nothing extra.
Can you deliver the car to Cancún airport?
Yes. We deliver across Playa del Carmen and the wider Riviera Maya, including Cancún and Tulum airports and Puerto Morelos / Puerto Aventuras. Most visitors fly into Cancún, so picking the car up there and driving down is usually the simplest option. Message us with your flight details and we'll arrange the handover.
How does fuel work?
You get the car with a full tank and return it full. No refuelling service charges, no prepaid fuel packages.
Can I drive to Tulum, Chichén Itzá or Bacalar?
Yes — that's what most of our renters do, and mileage is unlimited. Tulum is about an hour south, Chichén Itzá roughly two and a half hours inland, and Bacalar around three and a half hours south. Highway 307 runs along the coast and is in good condition.
Is it safe to drive in the Riviera Maya?
Roads in Quintana Roo are well maintained and clearly signposted, and driving here is straightforward for visitors. Two local things to know: speed limits drop sharply when you pass through towns, and topes — speed bumps, often unmarked — are everywhere, so keep your speed down in built-up areas. Fill up in larger towns rather than waiting, as stations thin out inland.
How do I book a car?
Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and the car you want. We reply in English, Spanish or Russian, confirm availability and the full price, and arrange pickup or delivery. There's no booking form to fight with and no prepayment required to hold a car.
